When The Royal Hawaiian opened on Feb. 1, 1927, the head-turning hotel offered a trendsetting blend of luxury and Hawaiian hospitality. Throughout 2017, the Waikiki resort will honor that legacy with 90th anniversary programs that are both upscale and island-inspired.
For instance, its Mai Tai Bar will feature afternoon Flashback Fridays with 1920s and 1930s music and vintage drinks, while the new Bar at Azure presents a morning juice bar and evening wine and cheese. In addition, Royal Hawaiian Bakery, which boasts a range of fresh-baked confections, opened earlier this month.
As part of the celebration, The Royal’s chefs have concocted four culinary events — each one will have a theme and will start with a dinner Friday night, followed by a Saturday morning cooking class and a luncheon. Dubbed Epicurean Journeys, the gatherings take place March 31 to April 1; June 30 to July 1; Sept. 29-30; and Dec. 15-16.
Visitors might prefer to time their visit with one of the hotel’s four summer outdoor concerts, complete with pop-up restaurants. Also in the works: al fresco screenings of movies that were filmed on-property.
Clients who book the 90th Anniversary package get a Royal Hawaiian Bakery tin filled with their choice of goodies, a $90 resort credit and more. Package rates, good through Dec. 17, start at $430 per night with a three-night minimum.
